Fans reaction: Well, the opinions here are split, after ‘Yonkers‘ huge success the majority would expect more from Goblin, but many were let down by the different and weird sound. In the same time the new ‘indie hip hoppers‘ wave were more than satisfied and considered this a revolutionary album. It’s a known fact that Tyler attracted a lot of haters because of his attitude, but the same attitude brought him many admirers.
My opinion: I think this album was a real success and different in a positive way.My favorite track is Sandwitches, probably because it has a more rhythmic sound than the rest of the slow tracks where Tyler speaks more than raps, explaining to fans the things he just said. Considering the hype around this artist, maybe it didn’t match my expectations, but I would give it an 8/10 especially for the production part which is amazing and it’s all done by OFGWKTA‘s leader.
I’ve posted the video from She featuring Frank Ocean (great artist) so you can make an opinion about the predominant sound on Goblin if you didn’t listen to it yet.

Lupe Fiasco. March 8th. L.A.S.E.R.S!
Fans reaction: too commercial, but Lupe is still ok; the mass reaction: totally awesome…the result: many many albums sold and millions of youtube views.
My opinion: Ironically fiasco is the most appropriate word. Let us remember the times when Atlantic Records was postponing the album’s release, the times when fans were protesting and signing petitions. We are talking about the most anticipated album of the year 2011, coming from a conscious rapper like Lupe, so I don’t understand what is with the auto-tuned choruses and uninspired collaborations, the radio sound (electro-pop shit)???. I really appreciate Lupe, for what he does, for his intelligent lyrics, for the fact that he is an activist, but L.A.S.E.R.S is an epic fail.
I’ve posted a video with Lupe Fiasco live along Erykah Badu at BET Awards. I decided to post this particular video rather than the original with Skylar Grey singing the chorus. I think that this live bit proved that he is capable of much more than what he did on L.A.S.E.R.S.

Sims (Doomtree) – Bad Time Zoo

Another Doomtree member on the list: Sims released on the 15th of February his 2nd album – Bad Time Zoo.
Bad Time Zoo drops 6 years after his debut album called Lights Out Paris.
Fans reaction: It was about time Sims dropped another album, this meaning another big step forward for Doomtree Crew.
My opinion: I’m not a big Doomtree fan, but I have to admit they have potential. As for Sims’ album I appreciate the themes he chose: consume culture, avidity, personal interests and many other defects that describe today’s society that we live in, but what’s most interesting is the way he manages to touch these subjects without boring us or sounding flat in any way.

Slaine – A World With No Skies

A World With No Skies is Slaine’s debut album and it was launched in 2010, although after some incidents, the rapper re-launched the album in August calling it A World With No Skies 2.0.
Fans reaction: The album was very well received by the rap listeners, like c’mon it’s Slaine… a La Coka Nostra member, so it couldn’t fail.
My opinion: The album represents an autobiography, and it’s like the listener would walk in his shoes and into his dark mind. Also what makes me listen to A World With No Skies is the fact that it’s an aggressive album (in La Coka Nostra specific style). A big plus are the collaborations: Everlast, Ill Bill, Vinnie Paz, Reef the Lost Cauze and Static Skeletah producing it: the man is hardcore, i admit it.
*the only track that i deeply dislike is “Borrowed Time“ because it has a sensitive/nostalgic nature, which doesn’t fit Slaine’s style at all.

It’s February 2011!
Paper Tiger is a producer, member of Doomtree hip hop collective (not known by many, hence the introduction). Moving on, on the 15th, Paper Tiger released his official album called Made Like Us.
Fans reaction (mostly Doomtree fans): the album received many positive critics, being appreciated for it’s sensitivity expressed by instrumentals
My opinion: I totally agree with the fans, Made Like Us has a melodramatic sound that looks like it was well thought and has an elaborate concept with a lullaby smack.

Madlib Medicine Show No. 11: Low Budget High Fi Music

Madlib dropped Low Budget High Fi Music on the 18th of January 2011, from the ‘Medicine Show‘ series.
Fans reaction: Same quality music Madlib got us used to.
My opinion: The mixtape is a collection of materials done by Madlib over the time so Low Budget High Fi Music doesn’t revolve around a theme, like the previous materials from the Medicine Show series, but it’s OK, all the tracks sound good which translates to cool beats and extraordinary capacity of mixing many music genres.
*Anyway it’s a known fact that Madlib doesn’t ever disappoint and any combination that involves him (Madvillain, Quasimoto, Jaylib etc.) equals quality hip hop.

The purpose of this category, 2011 Hip Hop Albums, is to make a very extensive presentation (from a quantity point of view) of this years albums. Some of them you probably listened to, but some of them you probably didn’t notice because they didn’t have enough promotion to attract your attention. Some of them are truly extraordinary, some of them not so good. Anyway, I’ve rejected from the beginning to present crappy stuff like : Lil Wayne, Rick Rosss, SouljaBoy or other weird creatures that suck in the hip hop world.
So here it goes:

My opinion: A pretty interesting album, seeing the multitude of producers that he worked with. Although Kweli was never in the top charts, I think he has a great skill of keeping himself above the line and not boring his fans due to his capability to experiment and always writing intelligent verses.
